Innternational Day

Innternational Day

When I was just a freshman coming into Hallahan, I knew it was a fresh slate for me to improve myself and my community. During the year I was exposed to cultures I have only heard about, some never heard of, and I was well aware of the influence I had through my Student Council position. On a blistering hot day in June, I presented to Student Council an idea that was only a dream at the time. The main goal of my idea was to celebrate the beautiful diversity of Hallahan, something I knew that would bring about happiness, comfort, and trust in the already tight knit community of Hallahan.

The initial idea was to have a huge parade down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with girls representing their country and culture by holding the country’s flag and dressing in the colors, it would’ve been a show of Hallahan pride and spirit. Afterwards, a fair would ensue, where girls bring in food, dance, games, and anything else from their culture and everybody is available to go around and learn about and experience other cultures, more than they are exposed to during an ordinary school day.

This year, with the help of Student Council and multiple teachers, my dream was turned into reality. Although it was not a parade, the fair represented multiple cultures fairly, people got their face painted, food was brought in, and most important of all, girls were able to experience and educate themselves about the different cultures that make up the Hallahan community.

The parade is still a dreamy vision in the back of my mind and hopefully I can one day make it happen. Until then, I will get lost in the sea of cultures of Hallahan and continue to grow in knowledge and experience.
