Underrated Songs

Underrated Songs

I put together a compilation of songs that I think are absolutely great and I think you will love. Hope you find your new favorite song or artist here!

The Neighbourhood

This group became well known for their very California-like hit song “Sweater Weather”. Little do most people know, their other music is just as good, or even better. All of their albums make you feel like you’re in California. If you enjoy Lana Del Rey, you are sure to like this band. Some of my favorite songs by them:

“Baby Came Home”

“Wires”

“#Icanteven (feat. French Montana)”

“Lurk”

“Jealous ft. (@caseyveggies @100s)”

“Dangerous ft. (@YG)”

“Cry Baby”

“The Beach”

“Daddy Issues”

“R.I.P. 2 My Youth”

“U&I”

The last shadow puppets

A duo band, Miles Kane and Alex Turner, created this band in 2007 and it was short lived. Recently brought back to life, their new album Everything You’ve Come To Expect is expected to release on April 1, 2016. As unpopular as they are, the few songs I’ve heard of them were crazy good. Perfect for fans of the Arctic Monkeys. My favorites:

“The Age of the Understatement”

“My Mistakes Were Made for You”

“Standing Next to Me”

“Bad Habits”

The Arctic Monkeys

If you listen to Q102, then you might recall “Do I Wanna Know?” a beautiful, but short lived hit. The Arctic Monkeys have come a long way from their first album and their most recent, AM, is a dramatic change from their original work and is so good that it has already graced the best of alternative lists. You may have fallen in love with the sultry Alex Turner in AM but don’t be scared to venture into his earlier years, where his accent was thick and he was more “cute” then “smoldering bad guy with a cigarette behind his ear.” My favorites (new and old):

“I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor”

“Fake Tales of San Francisco”

“When the Sun Goes Down”

“Balaclava”

“Fluorescent Adolescent”

“Old Yellow Bricks”

“505”

“Plastic Tramp”

“My Propellor”

“Crying Lightning”

“Cornerstone”

“Pretty Little Visitors”

“Black Treacle”

“You’re So Dark”

“Arabella”

Walk The Moon

The 2015 summer anthem was “Shut Up and Dance” which now probably just makes you want to change the station, but their whole album is great. It’s like stepping into a time machine and going to the 80s. My favorites:

“Up 2 U”

“Different Colors”

“Spend Your $$$”

“Down in the Dumps”

Halsey

This New Jersey native mixes up electronic with alternative to form a fresh modern sound. Her very liberal single “New Americana” has graced the radio for a short while. But don’t stop there, her other stuff is great! My favorites:

“Haunting”

“Castle”

“Young God”

“Colors”

Taylor Swift

Her recent dramatic change from country to pop has been a positive one. Whatever genre Taylor Swift is in, she will always rock it because she is an amazing songwriter. I personally adore her older records. The lyrics were all beautiful and each song told a story. It was so much fun listening to Taylor throughout my adolescence. If you always disregarded Taylor, give her a chance and listen to some of her most underrated songs:

“Should’ve Said No”

“Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)”

“Untouchable”

“Forever & Always (Piano Version)”

“Come in with the Rain”

“SuperStar”

“Fearless”

“You’re Not Sorry”

“The Best Day”

“Speak Now”

“Never Grow Up”

“Enchanted”

“Innocent”

“Long Live”

“State of Grace”

“Red”

“Treacherous”

“All Too Well”

“The Last Time (feat. Gary Lightbody)”

“Sad Beautiful Tragic”

“Lucky One”

“Everything Has Changed (feat. Ed Sheeran)

“Starlight”

“I Wish You Would”

“This Love”

“Clean”

“Wonderland”

“You Are In Love”

“New Romantics”

Lana Del Rey

If you’re one of the few people who has not yet invested in a Lana album, what are you waiting for? Her image is all about being sad, living in California, and gambling at Las Vegas. All of her songs have a sad film over them. Your emotions are always stirred and somehow you still want to sing as loud as possible. My favorites:

“Diet Mountain Dew”

“Video Games”

“Dark Paradise”

“Radio”

“Carmen”

“Without You”

“Lolita”

“Lucky Ones”

“American”

“Cola”

“Body Electric”

“Gods and Monsters”

“Yayo”

“Brooklyn Baby”

“Pretty When You Cry”

“Money Power Glory”

“The Other Woman”

“God Knows I Tried”

“Religion”

“Salvatore”

“The Blackest Day”

Vance Joy

Best known for his summer anthem “Riptide”, listening to Vance Joy’s album Dream Your Life Away feels like being on a honeymoon. His voice is comforting and the lyrics of every song tell a different, beautiful love song. Vance Joy is completely underrated as an artist. Most underrated songs:

“First Time”

“Mess is Mine”

“My Kind of Man”

“Who Am I”

“Winds of Change”

The Weeknd

With a dark, lusty image The Weeknd is probably the darkest artist on this list. Sure you’ve heard his singles “I Can’t Feel My Face” and “Earned It” but the more explicit songs on his albums are so much better:

“The Zone (feat. Drake)”

“D.D.”

“Initiation”

“High For This”

“Wicked Games”

“Professional”

“Belong to the World”

“Live for (feat. Drake)”

“Losers (feat. Labrinth)”

“Often”

“Acquainted”

“Shameless”

“Dark Times (feat. Ed Sheeran)”

Singles

I cannot leave these songs out. They’re too good not to share. These remain my favorites of the artists, but maybe you can discover a new artist.

“Tainted Love” by Soft Cell

“Don’t” and “Sorry Not Sorry” by Bryson Tiller

“Sober” “Late Night in Kauai (feat. Jaden Smith)” “Outside” by Childish Gambino

“Gone” by Lianne La Havas

“Vertigo (feat. Alex Turner)” by Mini Mansions

“Endless Summer (Single Mix)” by Oceana

“Don’t Make Me a Target” “I Just Don’t Understand” “They Want My Soul” by Spoon

“Glitter and Gold” by Rebecca Ferguson
